Tax break voted for single persons
The Senate Finance Committee backed a $600 million tax break for single earners, approving a Nixon Administration proposal to cap single tax burden at no more than 20 percent more than a married person with the same income. Senator Eugene J. McCarthy noted current law creates up to 40 percent extra taxes for singles in the $20,000 to $40,000 bracket. A separate proposal to ease taxes for singles was rejected.
