Vandenberg AFB cutback ordered affecting thousands
Congress man Charles Teague announced a cutback at Vandenberg Air Force Base reducing operations by 1,300 military and 200 civilian personnel by December 31. Oxnard AFB will close with 1,284 military and 293 civilian jobs cut and savings of 14.094 million. The Pentagon plan targets 37,800 military and 27,000 civilian positions nationwide for a 609 million annual saving, with overseas installations to be announced after host-country consultations.

Tragic riverbank collapse claims Lompoc youth
Ray Eldon Christiansen 12, an honor student from 1121 N Sixth St, died after the Santa Ynez River bank collapsed while rescuers fought to reach him. Witnesses described a 30 foot fall and several locals, including Roger Scott Christiansen and John Worley, aided in the frantic effort. Funeral services at McPeek Family Mortuary were pending.

Trustees to award contract for Vandenberg Junior High project
Lompoc Unified School District trustees are to vote tomorrow on awarding a contract to J O Miller Construction Co for a multipurpose room at Vandenberg Junior High. They will also decide if the district should finance transporting rural pre first grade students, spurred by Jalama Road residents, at a cost of about $9,730 with $7,000 from the state and the rest from local funds. Cost per pupil is estimated at $101.
