Abebe Bikila Dies at 46 in Ethiopia

Ethiopian Olympic marathon winner Abebe Bikila died at age 46 from an apparent brain hemorrhage. The Imperial Guard announced his death. Bikila had risen from corporal to captain in the Ethiopian army after barefoot victory in 1960.

Tigers release Frank Howard after career with Detroit

Detroit Tigers give unconditional release to Frank Howard the 6 foot 7 inch 280 pound slugger who hit 382 career homers and ranked 17th all time in that category. Howard declined a minor league manager job saying he would pursue other opportunities in and out of baseball. He spent last season as a designated hitter batting .256 with 12 homers.

Commissioner Bowie Kuhn announced a regular season attendance of 30,115,453 paid admissions. Unofficial World Series attendance reached 358,289, Championship Series 438,281, and All-Star game 40,849. Free admissions totaled 3,395,727 across 24 clubs.

The Lompoc Braves swept to a 27 29 win over San Luis Obispo on the foes home course as Roger Fabing set a course record 11 49 for SLO with teammate Jim Schankel second in 12 03. Lompoc placed sixth through eleventh led by Terry Jackson 12 33 John Fick 12 37 and Dave Smith 13 60. JV San Luis won 24 33 with Scott Hall 13 25.

Cabrillo Conquistadores win as Martin sets course record

Cabrillo tops Santa Maria 35 to 23 with Mike Martin blazing a 13 12 course record at Village Country Club. Martin beats Zorich’s old mark by 11 seconds and led a trio of Cabrillo runners finishing high as Santa Maria claimed runners in second and third.
