Cosmonauts Tour Disneyland as US visit continues

Soviet cosmonauts Vitali Sevastyanov and Andrian Nikolayev toured Disneyland and the Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena during a national tour. They were escorted by astronaut Edwin Aldrin Jr. and spent part of the weekend in California. The visit followed a record 18 day space voyage in June.

Goodell vows race despite criticism in New York

Senator Charles E. Goodell announced he would stay in the New York U S Senate race despite pressure from Vice President Spiro Agnew and criticism. He refused to quit the Republican bid and urged supporters to back Democrat Richard Ottinger against Conservative James Buckley, asserting his commitment to election.

A two story Bank of America branch on the UC Irvine campus was destroyed by a highly suspicious fire. Investigators probed the ruins as arson possible. A nearby Stanford Research Institute blast and prior campus attacks linked to radicals cited.

Eight-hour Detroit clash ends with officer killed and arrests

Police dispersed a disturbance at Myrtle and 14th Streets where Black Panthers sold literature. Eight hours of violence left Patrolman Marshall Emerson shot in the hand and Patrolman Glenn E. Smith dead. Fifteen youths were jailed as 12 people surrendered from the Panther headquarters under protection of community leaders. A hearing was set for Friday.
