Salvador Allende was elected president by the Chilean Congress as the first freely chosen Marxist chief of state in the western hemisphere. He won 153 votes to 35 for Jorge Alessandri, with seven ballots blank, amid martial law and security restrictions following an assassination attempt on the army chief. Johns-Manville and union reach two year labor pact
Johns-Manville Products Co and Local 146 of the International Chemical Workers Union sign a two year contract giving about 470 workers roughly 70 cents an hour rise plus fringe benefits. The package adds 13 cents an hour annually plus a cost of living adjustment, improved vacation and shift differentials, a prepaid prescription drug plan, and an incentive bonus plan for maintenance staff. Total cost is $650,000 to $700,000 over two years with average earnings around $4.70 an hour before the agreement. The contract takes effect Sunday.
