Fire damages clothes closet at Golden West Hotel

Fire officials estimate 200 dollars in damage to a clothes closet in Fred Benhart’s quarters at the Golden West Hotel 206 W Ocean Ave. The fire at about 7 55 p m left unknown clothing damaged Benhart was away at the time Gary Kirby the hotel owner’s son helped extinguish and sought medical treatment for minor smoke inhalation a woman seen fleeing after the blaze is being investigated and police note no other injuries.

Brooke says opposition to Haynsworth near enough votes to block

Senator Edward Brooke said the opposition to Supreme Court nominee Clement Haynsworth was close to a blocking threshold as Senator Richard Schweiker joined active opposition. Brooke noted unofficial counts put Schweiker in the opposition while urging Nixon to withdraw the nomination, though the president seemed inclined to press ahead.

Dual office study asked over Henry compatibility

The county counsel’s office reviews whether Michael J. Henry of Carpinteria can hold both his County Planning Commission seat and his new role as assistant superintendent of the Santa Barbara City Recreation Department. Assistant County Counsel Susan Trescher said Henry asked for the study and a written legal opinion will follow, with no incompatibility seen unless both roles are deemed public offices and incompatible. Henry’s appointment to the recreation post was announced by Recreation Department superintendent Bill Bertka.
