Kent State arrests begin in campus riot case

Kent State University student government president Craig Morgan was among the first four arrested on indictments tied to violent campus disorders last May. More arrests of the 25 indicted were expected, as defense lawyer William Kunstler arranged co counselors for the Kent 25. Morgan pleaded innocent to a second degree riot and was freed on bond. others arrested include Dr. Thomas S. Lough Jerry H. Rupe and Richard C. Felber.

Witnesses recount My Lai massacre at trial

Government witnesses testified at the My Lai case that S Sgt David Mitchell fired two rifle clips into unarmed Vietnamese civilians crowding a ditch. They described soldiers herding people into the ditch before opening fire as Lt. Calley joined in.

Eban warns Israel would win if cease fire collapses

Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban told reporters that Israel would surely prevail in another Middle East war if the cease fire fails and fighting resumes. He urged that the current pause could lead to peace, while Egypt named veteran diplomat Mahmoud Fawzi as premier designate amid UN diplomacy.

Nixon and Gromyko to Meet in Washington Amid Talks

President Nixon will meet Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko in Washington Thursday to ease tensions. Secretary of State Rogers said the session aims at better understanding despite remaining splits on missile violations in the Middle East and Berlin.

Supervisors weigh motorcycle problems in county and city areas

The Board of Supervisors heard reports that motorcyclist activity has grown beyond sheriff's capacity to enforce. A Santa Maria area critic cited noise in Old Oak Knolls and said officers cannot catch violators. Mayor Art Scott proposed broader bans near occupied buildings and on undeveloped lands, suggesting 1,000 foot buffers and designated vacant areas for riding.

Seale charges dropped in Chicago riot case

U.S. District Court Judge Julius J. Hoffman dismissed riot conspiracy charges against Bobby Seale, tied to the 1968 Democratic National Convention protests. The government cited the acquittal of the other seven defendants on conspiracy charges as the reason to drop Seale’s case.
