The U.S. government declared the U S National Bank of San Diego insolvent, selling it to Crocker National Bank for 89 5 million. The bank was California s ninth largest and 89th in the nation with 62 branches and 314 000 depositors. FDIC protection was discussed though some losses to stockholders were expected.

FBI probes shooting death on Pine Ridge reservation
