A general strike across Italy brings normal life to a standstill with heavy clashes in Milan where a police officer died and 21 officers and eight demonstrators were injured. Government plans $1.1 billion for new housing over three years amid widespread closures and transport disruptions.
Allied sources report over 5,000 Communist deaths in the two week period, with American losses reaching a two month high. South Vietnam tallied 674 dead and 2,234 wounded, as B 52 airstrikes pounded near Bu Prang and Duc Lap and fighting continued in the Central Highlands near the Cambodian border.
Lompoc City Council approved a new business license ordinance raising the minimum fee from 25 to 30 and increasing annual rental unit fees. The measure passed 32 with dissent from Arthur Scott and Richard Jacoby. Hotels and motels were moved to gross receipts taxation, with a 1000 maximum. The ordinance takes effect July 1, 1970, pro rating for preexisting businesses.

Sgt. Robert William Kelley, a 10 year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department and Lompoc Valley resident, is named commanding sergeant of the Lompoc Sheriff’s Substation. Sheriff James Webster also appoints Ron Gardner as detective and second in command. Both promotions take effect December 1 to align with the county payroll.
A pre dawn fire consumed the George Moore residence on Jalama Road with garden hose efforts by the family and quick response from Substation 5 in Vandenberg Village and Buellton. No injuries were reported, and officials cited about 28000 dollars in losses including all personal possessions. The roof collapsed while walls remained charred as neighbors helped retrieve a family photo album. The four Moore children stayed with neighbors while the parents were elsewhere.
Former ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy lay in a simple metal casket at his Hyannis Port home near a window overlooking Nantucket Sound. The 81 year old patriarch died Tuesday after an eight year heart ailment. Funeral mass set for Thursday with family attendance by invitation.
