Lompoc Braves blank San Marcos High Royals 9-0 to improve to 3-0 against Chanel League opponents this season. Paul Lewis led the offense with a late score, while Dan Genest topped the ground game with 80 yards on 14 carries as Lompoc's stingy defense limited the Royals to under 40 rushing yards.

Pirates Win World Series Triggers Downtown Pittsburgh Celebration

Thousands flooded Pittsburgh streets after the Pirates clinched the World Series. Police reported up to 100000 revelers with 69 arrests for intoxication or disorderly conduct. Hospitals treated about 65 injuries and property damage included window smashing and overturned taxis.

Hancock Hands Hartnell First Loss in Lompoc

Hancock Bulldogs upset previously unbeaten Hartnell Panthers 26 23 at Huyck Stadium. Tom Jones rushed for 158 yards and two touchdowns guiding Hancock's win while Hartnell scored on a Ron Choate plunge and a 57 yard Teresa run. Hancock meets Reedly in Santa Maria at 7:30 p.m.

Clemente to Receive 1972 Car for World Series MVP

Roberto Clemente of the Pirates will get a 1972 automobile after being chosen by a national magazine as the World Series Most Valuable Player. He is the fifth non pitcher to win the honor since 1955, with prior non pitchers including Frank Robinson and Brooks Robinson.

Palmer wins Lancome Trophy after rain soaked round

Arnold Palmer shot 71 in rain to win the Lancome Trophy Invitation at Saint-Nom-la-Breteche finishing 54 holes at 202. Gary Player finished two back in second, Chi Chi Rodriguez third at 211, with Tony Jacklin one stroke behind. Palmer earned $20,000, Player $2,000.

Pirates Triumph In World Series Close, Murtaugh Still Undecided

The Pittsburgh Pirates won 2-1 over the Baltimore Orioles in Game seven to clinch the World Series. Manager Danny Murtaugh weighed retirement in three to four weeks as stars Roberto Clemente and Steve Blass led the victory with Clemente homering early and Blass delivering four hits on the mound.

Lakers Roll Past Knicks In 118 104 Victory

Los Angeles Lakers beat New York 118 to 104 as Jim McMillian led with 28 points at Madison Square Garden. Jerry West added 25 and Flynn Robinson 22 while the Knicks struggled with depth and bench scoring.
