Hancock Bulldogs top Cal Poly Frosh 14 6 at Santa Maria

Allan Hancock's Bulk dogs overcome Cal Poly Frosh 14 to 6 at Dave Boyd Field in Santa Maria for their third straight win. Cal Poly struck first on an 8 yard run by Mike Thomas but Hancock rallied with a third quarter TD pass from Roger Pacheco to Charles Howard followed by a 47 yard rushing score from Carl Shelton. Defensive standouts limited Poly to 51 rushing yards in the second half and forced four fumbles two recovered by Norm Carlin Gary Jolk and Bob Freeman.

Braves Sweep Dos Pueblos Invitational With Team Title

Lompoc Braves win the overall cross country team championship at the Dos Pueblos Invitational in Santa Barbara. Junior Larry Hildenbrand wins the junior race in 10:10, freshman Terry Williams takes the freshman race in 10:30, with Ed Brazdowski and Jose Guerrero close behind. Sophomore Ron Vogt leads Lompoc in the sophomore race with a 10:21 for second. Final team score 91 to 129 over Newport Harbor, with Long Beach Wilson third and host Dos Pueblos fourth.

Montreal Canadiens crushed Los Angeles 5 1 and St Louis Blues defeated Chicago 7 2 to open NHL season with strong showings. Oakland Seals edged Chicago 2 1 as Doug Mohns scored Chicago’s lone goal. Bruins beat Rangers 2 1 in Boston.

Jim Brady claimed overall low gross with par 72 in the United Fund golf tournament benefiting Lompo c Jaycees at Village Country Club. Had Burger won low net with 65 and both Ram tickets were awarded to Burger and Al West in separate prize sets.
