West retires from Lakers after storied 14 seasons
Jerry West announced his retirement at 36, saying he cannot play the game the way he wants. The guard, 13 time All-Pro and 25,000-point scorer, cited personal standards and age as reasons, while coach Bill Sharman urged him to continue. West plans to stay in Los Angeles with California Sports Inc. and hinted at postbasketball plans.
