Senate poised to vote on consumer class action bill
The Senate is expected to act next week on a bill allowing a single consumer or a group to sue on behalf of all buyers of an allegedly defective product. The Nixon administration opposes the plan citing court backlog and favors a DOJ FTC supervised option. Senator Bayh criticized the administration stance and argued class actions help middle income Americans seek their day in court. He noted poor citizens can use legal services and the wealthy rarely pursue such suits. Bayh chairs a Judiciary Committee panel that approved the bill. He warned protections against consumer fraud in many states are often illusory.
