From cattle herds to rows of pines on Rancho San Julian
Harold Poett, a descendant of Jose de la Guerra, runs a five acre Monterey Pine Christmas tree farm on Rancho San Julian Drive near Lompoc. He planted 2500 pines in 1971 and now sells trees by the foot for a dollar plus tax. The operation faces pruning demands, aphid and deer challenges, and yearly plantings, with 4,000 trees from two years prior culled for maturation delays.

Navarro probation hearing set for Monday
Raul Jose Navarro 36, an administrative aide to Board of Supervisors Chairman Charles F. Catterlin, faces a Monday 9 a.m. probation and sentencing hearing before Superior Judge John A. Westwick at the Santa Barbara Courthouse. Convicted Nov 6 by a jury of agreeing to accept a bribe in the Zaca Lake Resort case, Navarro could receive 1 to 14 years in state prison but is parole eligible. He was indicted on two counts. the jury found the greater bribery charge guilty. Navarro was remanded without bail after conviction. The defense claims the $1000 found on Navarro Aug 19 was a political contribution. prosecutors say he sought a bribe for influencing Catterlin's vote. The project failed when Catterlin voted against it, and Zaca Lake Resort president Howard Olsen gave Navarro the money while officers watched.
