Cannikin blast on Amchitka larger than expected says AEC
The Atomic Energy Commission reported on Amchitka Island that the Cannikin test produced bigger cliff and turf slides, cracks in a drilling mud dike, and about 5000 cubic yards of mud entering a creek. No airborne or sea radioactivity released. Effects on wildlife were within expected ranges, and mammal, bird, fish life faces no permanent harm. The blast, beneath the surface, was a nearly five megaton underground test designed to evaluate a Spartan warhead for Safeguard. Further drilling will gather radiochemical samples, with results expected next spring, and hundreds of aftershocks followed the explosion.
