Space age elk Monique II shot by hunter in Wyoming

Monique II, a space age cow elk part of a NASA experiment, was killed by a hunter near the Gros Ventre River in northwestern Wyoming. A bright red 25 pound collar identified her and the $25,000 device, attached last April, was recovered with no immediate plan for a third Monique.

Undersheriff Richard L. King to retire early December

Richard L. King filed for retirement after nearly 24 years with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department. His effective date is planned for January 1 when John Carpenter succeeds as sheriff. King will leave days before year’s end and notes plans to use accrued time. Sheriff James Webster will step down at year end. The Community Action Commission of Santa Barbara County will meet tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the Goleta Union School cafeteria to discuss committee reports.

Recycling tips and library book charity guidance

Minier declines to prosecute Assemblyman MacGillivray

District Attorney David D. Minier will not prosecute Assemblyman W. Don MacGillivray for filing an invalid 1970 Homeowner's Property Tax exemption claim. The reason given is a total absence of evidence indicating criminal intent. The probe began two weeks before the Nov. 3 election at the request of MacGillivray's opponent, Kenneth Palmer.

Berman reveals plans for Goleta Valley ranch project

Jules Berman owner of El Capitan Ranch in the Goleta Valley says he now aims to develop part of his western ranch for residential use and has no plans to lease land for oil exploration. Ecology center manager Paul Relis urged the Santa Barbara Board of Supervisors to form a county wide committee to restudy the general plan and review zoning west of Ellwood.

Yearling Pleads Guilty to Misdemeanor Assault in Lompoc Court

Emmie D. Yearling, 25, of Novato, pleaded guilty in Lompoc Justice Court to a reduced misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon. He posted $1500 bond, awaits sentencing on December 22 after a pre-sentencing investigation. Police say he allegedly stabbed his wife on October 1 and was arrested at Vandenberg AFB.
