Walnut crop ranks slip in Santa Barbara County trend
Diamond Walnut News reports Santa Barbara County fell from 15th in 1958 to the all others category in 1975 as walnut acreage shrank from 2,661 to about 1.99 percent. In the Santa Ynez Valley, 1968 had 560 acres, dropping to 490 by 1975, with some plantings removed for profitable crops. The Las Armas Rancho in Goleta Valley will cease production after 1976, illustrating a broader trend in California walnuts.
