Rockefeller testifies gifts simple acts of generosity
Nelson A. Rockefeller defended his 2.5 million dollars in gifts and loans to political allies as charitable acts and admitted a paid-for book about a rival was a mistake. He detailed 15.5 million spent on campaigns and a million he gave to other Republicans as Senate hearings considered his vice presidential nomination. The chairman pressed whether wealth could unduly influence politics, to which Rockefeller replied wealth is safe only if power remains in the hands of the people.
