Edmund Fitzgerald sinks in 25 foot Lake Superior gale
The 729 foot ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald with a crew of 28 to 35 sank after a severe storm on Lake Superior. Coast Guard ships found debris and an oil slick about 50 miles northwest of Sault Ste. Marie. no survivors were seen. The ship was built in 1958 and carried 26,216 tons of taconite ore for Detroit.

Lompoc Second Quarter Taxable Sales Rise Near 20 Percent
The Board of Equalization reports Lompoc taxable sales for the quarter ending June 30 totaled 15.628 million, up from 13.174 million in 1974. General merchandise, food and liquor stores, and service stations contributed to gains while home furnishings and some sectors dipped slightly. County totals reached 157.64 million, up about 10.5 million from 1974, with a statewide gain of 7.4 percent. Prices rose 1.03 percent statewide, suggesting real merchandise volume fell about 2.7 percent.
