GI bill shortchanges East and Midwest veterans in education costs
A national report for the National Conference of Mayors finds Vietnam era veterans in the East and Midwest face higher tuition costs with GI bill benefits fixed at 220 to 270 dollars monthly for individuals and families. The gap leaves California vets spending far less of their benefits than they would at New York State schools. The study notes World War II vets received higher relative support, and cites tuition ranges from 165 dollars in California to 1,088 dollars at Vermont. Congress has raised allowances by 23 percent, but the president warned of a veto. the report calls the rise inadequate.
