Young mother to stand trial on narcotics charges

Carol Ann Gavin 26 a divorcee from Bell Gardens ordered to arraign in Norwalk Superior Court Nov. 24 after a preliminary hearing. Neighbor reported drug activity at Gavin home near an elementary school and the girl Dawn 5 allegedly spoke of selling drugs. Gavin held on $3,125 bond denying the accusations.

Marine imposter to be sent home unless charges filed

San Diego officials say 16-year-old Ledell Parker who posed as Marine Pvt. Robert A. Jenkins will likely be sent home to his mother if the Marine Corps does not press charges. He surrendered to police in October and later escaped from a hospital after arrest for impersonating a sergeant near the women’s barracks. He faces possible impersonation and assault charges.

Indians surrender Alcatraz in peaceful departure

A group of 14 college student Indians occupied Alcatraz Island over the weekend to press a claim under an 1848 treaty. They offered $24 in beads and cloth for the 16 acres, then left with Coast Guard escort as officials consider future use of the island.

Highway repairs slow as slope slides close Monterey coast

The State Division of Highways reports road slides on Highway 1 along the Monterey coast 26 miles south of Big Sur have closed the route. Until the slide control project finishes, a detour via Route 68 to Salinas and Highway 101 to San Luis Obispo is the only passage from Monterey to San Luis Obispo. An early storm delivering nearly two inches of rain delayed work by about a week.

Boy 14 Attempts Delta Hijack After Rome Incident

Cincinnati police report a 14 year old, David Booth, tried to hijack a Delta DC9 at Greater Cincinnati Airport by seizing an 18 year old passenger at knifepoint. He aimed for destinations including Sweden and Mexico before being talked out before takeoff.

Absentee ballots are being processed for the Lompoc Unified School District election set for December 2 to approve selling bonds at up to seven percent interest, with applications accepted in person or by mail until November 25. Ballots must be returned by December 1 at 5 p.m.
