Old Smokey Bear Dies in Sleep at 26

Old Smokey Bear, the national symbol for fire prevention, died in his sleep at the National Zoo. The 26 year old black bear had been retired as the campaign symbol in 1975 and had not left his cage for days. Officials said he died of old age and his body would be flown to New Mexico for burial at Smokey Bear Historical State Park near Capitan.
