City reverses plan for one-man rubbish collection trial

City officials say cancelling the four month trial of a one-man rubbish collection system will not incur city losses though residents may pay more under the present setup. No contract was negotiated with Government Innovators of Phoenix. Display samples of 300 gallon and 90 gallon containers were ordered but sent without obligation. The meeting followed strong opposition and a petition with over 3,500 signatures. Mayor Stevens noted delays in container shipment. The plan had aimed to save about 45000 annually. maintaining current service could lift the monthly fee from 3.15 to about 3.65. Councillor Lefkowitz said the city looks to sell recyclables from the landfill to lower costs.

Lompoc set to consider third year block grant funds

A public hearing Tuesday at 7 30 p m in City Hall will gather input on the City of Lompoc third year Community Development Block Grant allocation expected to reach 368000. Citizens heard first meeting October 21 proposals including a youth center and street work.

Trustees Seek Federal Funds for Lompoc Kitchen Project

Lompoc Unified trustees plan to authorize applying for Public Works Employment Act funds to build a central kitchen or modify buildings. The 7 p.m. meeting at Central Administration Building will also address attorney reappointment, March 8, 1977 school board election preparation, a commendation for Dr. Melvin Kranseler, and contract adjustments for staff.

Government identifies high Medicaid billings

The government released the names of 2,533 doctors dentists laboratories and pharmacies receiving 100000 or more last year for services to Medicaid patients. The HEW release drew criticism from the AMA claiming political motives and urging action against Medicaid mills and nursing operators rather than physicians.

Supreme Court keeps federal abortion funding alive pending ruling

The Supreme Court issued brief orders allowing continued federal funding for elective abortions while awaiting a challenge to a new law restricting such funds. The high court also agreed to review related cases on welfare benefits, unemployment, and local sign bans, with other actions on river pollution and penalties against Lompoc Utility Services Co. for the Santa Ynez River spill.

Carter faces church choice as civil rights split widens

President elect Jimmy Carter in Georgia weighs remaining in a segregated church or leaving Plains Baptist Church amid disbanding tensions over a ban on Negroes and civil rights advocates. The congregation plans to vote on dismissing Rev. Bruce Edwards while Rev. Clennon King seeks membership. Carter, vacationing on St Simons Island, will attend services Sunday.

Ford begins Palm Springs vacation as transition starts
