Petition drives dial-a-bus service pledge in City Council

Two thousand residents signed a petition delivered by Cora Kestren calling for immediate dial-a-ride service for elderly, crippled, and wheelchair users in Mission Hills and Vandenberg Village. Fugitives captured after jail escape and hostage drama

Two fugitives John Morgan and William Winans who escaped a Minnesota jail after shooting their way out and held a farm family hostage were captured when they slept and hostages escaped. FBI agent Trimbach said the Wegscheid family fled at 4:15 am. the gunmen surrendered without a fight once the law closed in.

Amigos de Las Americas meet at First United Methodist Church

Funeral services set for Lillie May Kimbel 92 who died Wednesday in San Bernardino. Services at Starbuck Mortuary Chapel tomorrow at 2 p.m. Interment at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery. Born 1881 in California, she lived in Lompoc 90 years and leaves a son Sam Kimbel of Santa Barbara, two daughters Helen Ross of San Bernardino and Lillie Fordice of Orcutt, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Planners drop two rezoning cases in Santa Ynez Valley

The County Planning Commission canceled public hearings on two General Plan amendment and rezoning requests due to missing environmental assessment data. The cases involve Lyn R. McClurg seeking highway commercial to commercial redesignation for a boutique and restaurant on Numancia St. and State Rt. 246 area east of Edison St. Santa Barbara National Bank seeks residential to neighborhood commercial designation and a rezoning to a planned commercial district overlay for property at Alamo Pintado Rd. and Old Mission Dr. in Solvang.

Congress Overrules Nixon On War Powers Veto Override

Congress votes 284 to 135 in the House and 75 to 18 in the Senate to override President Nixon and curb warmaking powers under the War Powers Resolution. Sponsors Zablocki and Javits say the veto is defeated and the move reflects a warning to the White House amid Watergate and Middle East tensions.
