Voters reject Melones Dam and LA rapid transit plan

Voters defeat two environmental measures and several statewide propositions. The Stanislaus River dam at New Melones is rejected 53 percent, while Los Angeles County Prop A for a 145 mile high speed rail and 206 million annual bond funding fails. Other props pass or fail as noted.

Democrats win nine governorships in 1976 sweep

Democrats took control of nine statehouses including California and New York, with notable upsets in Ohio and Maine. Connecticut saw Ella Grasso become the first woman elected governor in her own right, while Maine elected independent James Longley.
