Lompoc City Council Backs Bypass Revival Vote

In a blustery special session the Lompoc City Council voted 3-1 to resume construction on the Lompoc bypass freeway. Over 50 residents gathered with opponents outnumbering supporters by three to one as the panel approved pre-bypass steps.

Nixon may address nation on fuel shortages

The White House said President Nixon may speak to the nation as early as Wednesday about an acute fuel shortage prospect. He will meet with congressional leaders at 9 30 a m EST Wednesday to discuss energy issues and could issue a presidential address this week. A Cabinet meeting is planned for this afternoon on the subject.

Ford apparent shoo in for VP after televised hearings

Two days of nationally televised hearings on Gerald R. Ford's nomination for vice president left House Republicans optimistic about confirmation while opposition lingered. The Senate Rules Committee completed grilling Ford and House members from both parties offered praise as witnesses were set to testify behind closed doors. Sen Birch Bayh said he planned to vote against confirmation before Ford appeared.

Canada may halt U S oil shipments amid Arab pressure

Arab threats could force Canada to stop exporting refined oil to the northeastern United States. MacDonald cited diplomatic signals that Arab states still view Canada as neutral and warned that halting exports, mainly heating oil and jet fuel from Port Hawksbury, Saint John, and Come-by-Chance, could ease eastern Canadian shortages but disrupt U S supplies.
