GIs Freed by Viet Cong Return to Saigon for Steak Dinner

Three American GIs,Pfc James R Strickland Jr Pfc Coy R Tinsley and Spec 4 William A Watkins, were released by Viet Cong on the northern coast and arrived at Chu Lai for meals and medical exams. They will be sent home in two to three days.

Lodge warns Communists over Vietnam peace talks and Nixon plan

Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge told Communist negotiators at the Vietnam Peace Conference that peace hinges on their willingness to negotiate. He described Nixon's alternative Vietnamization plan to end the war if talks fail and warned against expecting concessions. Lodge cited public support for Nixon's policy and noted troop reductions and reduced infiltration as factors backing the approach.

Vietnamese War Escalation Hits Duc Lap and Highlands

North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces pressed attacks across Vietnam, striking the Duc Lap Green Beret camp near the Cambodian border and two American bases in the Central Highlands near Pleiku and Kontum. The surge followed a week of renewed offensives testing Saigon’s resolve. Casualties showed American deaths and WIA in the low hundreds for the week, with government losses higher against guerrilla forces.

Black Panther leader Seale is sentenced to four years for 16 acts of contempt during the Chicago Eight conspiracy trial. Judge Hoffmann also set an April 23, 1970 new riot conspiracy trial date. Seale plans to appeal.

Scattered showers dropped over half an inch of rain on Lompoc Valley as the first winter touch reached Southern California. Lompoc season total rose to .76 inch, down from 1.80 inches last year at this date. Goldwater warns Nixon critics warn about street protests

In Honolulu Senator Barry Goldwater told a GOP conference that the American public tires of street demonstrations more than the Vietnam war. City considers annexation to include Pine Canyon Road

Lompoc officials move toward annexing land to add Pine Canyon Road area and the Federal Correctional Institution. City Administrator Wahlers says Army consent letter is needed, with LAFCO approval before finalizing. Annexation would expand city size and add 1,400 to 1,500 inmates plus FCI staff, boosting state revenue by about 20k to 25k annually. The city will take on road maintenance and police patrol duties after completion.

Lompoc Sergeant arraigned in grand theft case

Sgt. William L. Williams of the Lompoc Police was arraigned in Lompoc Justice Court on grand theft charges after allegedly stealing 256 dollars in gate receipts from a Cabrillo High vs Righetti High football game on Oct. 31. He was released on his own recognizance as a hearing was set for next Wednesday. Williams resigns from the force amid ongoing investigation.

Attorney Mitchelson Arrives With New Evidence in Hijack Case

UPI reports American lawyer Marvin Mitchelson arrived in Rome to defend hijacker Raffaele Minichielo, claiming new evidence may bear on the case. He traveled with Minichielo’s mother Maria and sister Anna from Seattle and hinted at a possible psychiatric examination.
