Killer frees girl hostage in Philippine escape plan
A five man gang robber held 14 year old Susan Butler hostage for more than ten hours in Manila while a helicopter escape devised by two Philippine publishers and a crime reporter let the assailant flee. The gunman, calling himself Shotgun, stabbed a maid to death and wounded a woman before surrendering to the plan, and he was flown to a mountainside area northwest of Manila where police suspect ties to the New Peoples Army.

Confessed killer Edwards hangs self at San Quentin
Mack Ray Edwards 52, a confessed LA area serial killer, died by hanging in his Death Row cell at San Quentin.
