Nixon lawyers to file reply to Jaworski tape request

The Supreme Court will receive by Thursday an expedited answer from President Nixon’s lawyers to Jaworski’s bid for an early ruling on obtaining more White House tapes and documents. Justice Rehnquist did not participate. The case could delay the Watergate coverup trial slated for Sept. 9.

Nixon urges strong resistance to avoid higher cost of living

President Nixon warned Americans to resist inflationary policy or face higher living costs. He cited wage demands, price hikes, and more federal spending as dangers while praising recent output gains and a slowed price spiral. The CEA projected slower inflation by late 1974 but cautioned a stubborn inflationary process remains.

Jaworski cites evidence of White House IRS abuse

Prosecutor Leon Jaworski said he has evidence that the White House sought to abuse and politicize the IRS to harass Nixon political enemies. He asked Judge Sirica to order release of a Sept 15 1972 Oval Office tape and Haldeman notes, key to grand juries assessing conspiracy and civil rights violations.

County employee strike rumor denied by administrator

County Administrative Officer Raymond D. Johnson denied rumors that a county employee organization threatened to strike. The County Employees Assn. has removed a no strike provision by member vote, and a questionnaire on potential strike support is reported. Kissinger to Make Final Damascus Run on Golan Peace

Secretary of State Kissinger plans a last minute trip to Damascus to push a troop disengagement accord for the Golan Heights. He met with Prime Minister Golda Meir to discuss clarifications as Israel and Syria seek a resolution, while Assad and Gromyko discussed the talks in Damascus.
