Substitutes Seek 18 Percent Pay Increase in Lompoc

About 45 substitute teachers ask the Lompoc Unified School District Board of Trustees to raise daily pay from 29.50 to 35 dollars. They note a 24 percent rise in living costs since 1974 and say substitutes are the area's lowest paid. The board asked staff to study the request with a recommendation due June 28.

Occupancy dispute settled for unfinished building

Community Development Director Jack Lam said LeRoy Scolari agreed to post a $6,000 certificate of deposit to guarantee outside improvements at 403 North G St within 30 days. City inspectors were to review the site before day’s end to finalize the occupancy agreement.

Citizen comment invited on teacher pact proposal

Lompoc citizens may comment at a 7 p m public meeting on the Lompoc Education Association teacher contract proposal for next school year. The LEA seeks a 9 percent wage rise plus fully paid medical insurance and class size cuts. The school board invites citizen input before SB 160 negotiations proceed and a June 4 executive session plans set district instructions.

Moluccan gunmen release children in Assen siege

The Moluccan gunmen freed 102 children at Bavensmilde Primary School in Assen and prepared to move a hijacked train with 56 hostages. Government officials signaled caution as negotiations continued and four teachers remained held.
