County Administrative Officer Ray mond D. Johnson will present the 1969 70 county budget with a proposed tax rate increase possibly 20 cents or more. Valuation is expected to rise less than normal while overtime costs and salary boosts loom.
School officials near approval of a large book review program addressing about 40 new classroom texts and over a year of evaluation. About 35 titles are on display at the City Library for public inspection. The list reflects nine through twelve grade selections, with state coverage for earlier grades and some flexibility in five year use.
County Auditor A T Eaves Jr faced a flap when 1 000 blank payroll warrants vanished from a storeroom in the County Administration Building. Police issued an all points bulletin while IBM and the Data Processing Department tracked the warrants. Later, Eaves learned the warrants were misplaced rather than stolen and were located.
A domestic quarrel ended in violence with the booking of 20 year old housewife Linda Marie Mezza into Lompoc city jail on charges of attempted murder. She is accused of shooting her husband Airman 1C Michael Mezza with a .22 caliber pistol. Bail is set at 3125 dollars. He was hit in the right chest and listed in critical condition at Vandenberg Air Force Base hospital.
The United States delays removing its 36 military advisers as Peru demands a written request. Peru confirms Nelson Rockefeller’s May 30 fact finding trip is canceled and the embassy awaits formal written instruction before finalizing any withdrawal.
Myron Pottios, Rams linebacker and Notre Dame All American, is the 1969 parade marshal for the Lompoc Valley Flower Festival. The parade starts 10 a.m. Saturday June 28 with over 300 entries marching past the judges at Walnut Ave and North H Street.
Apollo 10 crew Stafford Cernan and Young complete a 61 hour mission with 31 lunar orbits and a dramatic near lunar surface flight. They describe the receding moon as they head toward splashdown in the South Pacific, eyeing July 16 for Apollo 11 lunar landing.
Lompoc Planning Commission will hold a public hearing to consider Robert E. Carey’s request to vary from setback rules for a dwelling addition at 520 E. Cypress Ave. The meeting also covers general plan trails, housing elements, and proposed family definition changes.
The 321st Strategic Missile Wing at Grand Forks AFB North Dakota narrowly won the SAC Missile Combat Competition by 1.5 points over F. E. Warren AFB after other wings faltered. Davis-Monthan AFB’s 390th SMW won Titan II crew honors while Warren led maintenance scoring despite a near sweep by others. The Minot AFB crew S-006 led Titan II combat crews with 1107.5 of 1200.
Twenty Lompoc Seniors Citizens Club members claim losses totaling 2000 dollars from International Tours of Los Angeles. The firm allegedly failed to provide air arrangements for a group Alaska trip. many had already paid deposits. LAPD has opened an investigation into the company and its president Thomas Bowditch. Police urge victims to file formal complaints with supporting documents at Parker Center.
