Apollo 10 astronauts Stafford Cernan and Young finish the first phase of the mission in moon orbit. They reached 9.5 miles from the lunar surface in Snoopy while preparing for the July 20 Apollo 11 landing attempt.

National Guard In North Carolina A&T Dorm Violent Clash

National Guard troops moved into the North Carolina A&T dormitory after sniper fire wounded at least seven people. A guard member was shot. Tear gas sprayed the building. Infantry ambush tactic pays off in Mekong Delta

U S infantrymen killed 134 Viet Cong over a two day Mekong Delta battle. Commanders credited a series of ambushes using guerrilla tactics to out guerrilla the guerrilla. Lt Col David Hackworth noted his battalion lost four wounded in the fighting.

Mechanic steals C 130 at Mildenhall vanishes

U S Air Force mechanic Sgt Paul A Meyer 23 took a C 130 Hercules from Mildenhall RAF at 5 10 am and disappeared. The 60 ton plane with nine hours fuel may be over water with rescue gear on board. Meyer from Poquoson Va had been drinking and was later found back at the base. His unit 36th Tactical Airlift Squadron was on temporary duty from Langley AFB Virginia.

Final OGO launch set for June 5 from Vandenberg

The final OGO launch in a six flight series will lift off from Vandenberg June 5. NASA conducts the mission with 26 experiments from 12 universities to study earth sun relations during a lull in solar activity. Built by TRW, the 1,370 pound satellite will ride a Douglas Thor Ad booster on an Agena payload.

Bond issue to be discussed on television by Lompoc fire chief

Lompoc voters face a June 3 bond election for 500000 in general obligation bonds to build a central fire station a new fire alarm system and a training test area. Fire Chief John Baker will appear on KEYT Channel 3 Santa Barbara at 2 p.m. in a 15 minute interview with filmed coverage also shown by KCOY Santa Maria at 6 p.m. prior to the election.

Sirhan B. Sirhan Sent to San Quentin Death Row

Sirhan B. Sirhan, 25, Arab immigrant, was moved from Los Angeles County Jail to San Quentin Prison and placed on death row for the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy. He was transferred by helicopter to Van Nuys Airport and flown to the prison in a state aircraft in the early morning, with Sheriff Peter Pitchess noting the operation as uneventful and mutual with state officers.
