Economy vs safety in Prop 15 debate in Lompoc

Battle outside New York metals plant leaves one dead

A brutal clash near Samson Industries in Queens on Wednesday left Devereaux McGuire dead and Fernando Anon wounded as Teamsters Local 810 men clashed with Ironworkers Local 455 during a struck plant protest. One Teamster was also injured.

GNP records 8.5 percent first quarter growth

The Commerce Department reports real GNP rose 8.5 percent annualized in Q1, exceeding preliminary estimates. Corporate profits after tax climbed 5.5 percent to 84.3 billion dollars, the highest since 1974 before the Arab oil embargo. Inflation steady at 3.5 percent deflator.

Kissinger says no alternative to detente at NATO talks

Secretary of State Kissinger told NATO ministers there is no alternative to detente with the Soviet Union regardless of the U.S. presidential outcome. He warned problems with Russia are fundamental, requiring a peace through strength approach, and cautioned against a Kremlin plan for world domination. He also pressed for rapid progress in Cyprus talks with Greek and Turkish officials.

Udall Seeks Michigan Recount After Slim Loss

Morris Udall's Michigan campaign may request a recount after losing the Democratic presidential primary to Jimmy Carter by under 1 percent. Campaign staff report possible vote tallies errors and uncounted ballots, with claims ballots were counted twice and absentee totals incomplete. A state elections official says results cannot yet be verified.

Carter Advocates Wide Tax Reform At Nevada Rally

Democratic frontrunner Jimmy Carter called for extensive tax reform and a reorganization of the executive branch. He labeled the tax system a disgrace and pressed welfare reform with work retraining and removal from assistance for refuse jobs. The Nevada rally at the University of Nevada drew over 1,200 people as Carter campaigned ahead of the Nevada primary.
