California tax revision push faces second committee hearing

Sacramento lawmakers and Gov. Reagan push a $2 billion tax revision plan led by Assembly speaker Moretti and Assemblyman Gonsalves. The package would shift taxes, expand withholding, cut property tax on owner occupied homes, raise sales and income taxes, and aid renters, seniors, and schools while taking over local welfare costs.

Yo-Yo Pioneer Donald Duncan Sr Dies at 71 in California

Donald Duncan Sr, multimillionaire creator of the Duncan yo-yo and the Duncan Parking Meter Co, died at 71 after a stroke at UCLA Medical Center. He popularized the yo-yo in the United States after buying a Filipino toy in the late 1920s and distributing it nationwide. He never claimed to invent the toy but coined the name yo-yo and built a global business empire. He is survived by his widow Denise and three sons.

Californians Rally for Higher School Funding Amid Budget Fight

About 1,500 teachers parents and labor union members marched on the Sacramento capitol urging more state aid. They criticized lawmakers and Gov Reagan while noting existing budget moves adding 82 million and 150 million in education funds and Reagan’s hold the line proposal of 1.6 billion for education.

Susie Q Captures Derby of the Frog World at Calaveras Jubilee

Susie Q won the Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee with a 17 ft 9 3 4 in leap earning $300 for owner Bill Moniz of Gustine California. Squirt from Lafayette took second, Ripple from Bill Proctor and Leonard Hall held the world record at 19 ft 3 1 3 in, with a strong foreign lineup led by Mystery Frog of Chihuahua Mexico. The event drew about 2 000 entries and featured a field reduced through Friday eliminations.
