Gas leak forces base evacuation near Vandenberg
A 16 year old Oakland visitor drove over a four inch natural gas line near Vandenberg Junior High School early Saturday causing evacuation of 300 families as a precaution. Charles L. Johnson suffered minor injuries. gas lines were shut off within about two hours and evacuees found shelter with friends or at the Base Officers' club. Weather forecast calls for patchy night clouds and cooler highs in the 63 to 68 range with 15 to 25 mph northwest winds.

Chief Ray Davis described a district based, community oriented department with 1000 black captains as liaisons. After one year major crimes fell 19.3 percent and arrests rose 33 percent.
