A homesick American who defected to Russia 17 years ago battled four Russian guards to reach the U S Embassy in Moscow in a bid to come home. Dean Hoxsey, raised in Whittier California, said disillusionment with communism and his failed fit in Russia prompted his defection. He served in the Marine Corps and Navy and said he hoped to become a doctor before fleeing to Moscow in 1975.
