Communists call Nixon peace plan absurd at talks

At the Vietnam peace talks in Paris the Communist side dismissed as absurd parts of President Nixon eight point plan while North Vietnamese and Viet Cong negotiators offered a milder stance on their demands. They rejected the mutual withdrawal as the path to peace but pressed the U S to withdraw all forces without conditions and opposed foreign interference in South Vietnam.

Regents Meet with Confrontation Threat at California Session

Guard patrols Berkeley streets after riot violence escalates

National Guardsmen patrolled near the University of California as 500 police used riot guns to disperse about 2,000 demonstrators in an hours long clash over People’s Park. Injuries included 128, with 32 hit by bird shot. 47 arrested as Governor Reagan mobilized guards and imposed a curfew.

Soviets land Venus 5 capsule after 160 million mile voyage

The Venus 5 unmanned Soviet spacecraft landed on Venus releasing a capsule that parachuted to the surface. Tass described the touch down as gentle and said Venus 5 continued sending information uninterrupted. Venus 6 was expected to land soon, highlighting Soviet lead in Venus exploration over the US Apollo program. Demonstrations in Berkeley caused injuries and property damage with tear gas and riot gun use. 44 treated, nine hospitalized.

Overworked city sewer plant poses difficult questions

Lompoc officials weigh options to expand a 1.7 million gallons a day sewer plant now handling 2.25 million with water pollution concerns. A 4.5 million gallon daily capacity addition is proposed at about 1.5 million dollars, with 1 million from locals and 0.5 million from a federal grant.
