Major apartment project approved by city planners
Lompoc Planning Commission approved a 102 unit apartment development to be built in two phases south of North Avenue and east of L Street, with a portion of L Street abandoned. The plan includes a 58 unit first phase with a recreation building and pool, and a 44 unit second phase. The panel also backed abandoning the undeveloped First Street right of way to aid a southeast Ocean Avenue and A Street commercial complex and a Cypress Avenue 29 unit project, saying the move would improve safety for Hapgood School playground nearby. Commission honored retiring commissioner James Flegge, now replaced by Charles Carmichael, and approved a car sales trailer at 239 North H St with conditions to curb sidewalk driving and exit via a rear alley.

Man rescued after night in Miguelito Channel
A 55 year old Lompoc man Manuel S Terrones suffered two broken legs and was rescued from Miguelito Channel west of Lompoc after a night spent trying to climb the steep walls. He was treated at Lompoc Hospital and then transferred to Santa Barbara County General Hospital for surgery. A farm worker Rosario Baldiviez heard his cries at 8 35 am and alerted authorities. Terrones said he had been drinking Sunday and walked to Surf, ten miles west of Lompoc, slipping near the railroad crossing and crying for help.
