Sheriff at Center of Board of Supervisors Talks

Sheriff James Webster faced multiple discussions with the Board of Supervisors Monday. He said police could not break up a 100-person Isla Vista beachfront ride-in without lewd conduct charges and noted a Los Padres nudity case lacked proof. He defended limited action during the Goleta Valley 1500-student antiwar freeway blockade.

Supervisors block move to back state health bond

County supervisors blocked Supervisor Daniel G. Grant's bid for board endorsement of the 242 million state health facilities bond known as Proposition 1 on the Primary Election ballot. A motion for county backers failed for lack of a second, led by Curtis Tunnell who argued UC facilities should not expand until current ones are well managed. The board later approved only filing Van Horne's request.
