Reds hit 159 allied bases as prelude to offensive

Pentagon research chief Dr John S Foster Jr warned a Soviet nuclear attack could wipe out about 90 percent of U S strategic missiles by 1975. He said fewer than 100 Minutemen would survive and supported ABM plans to shield missile silos amid rising Soviet SS9 deployment.

Nixon Abrams meet for Vietnam view on peace

President Nixon met Gen. Creighton Abrams in Washington to hear his views on the war. Abrams flew back to Vietnam later and will give the president his assessment of enemy activity and training of the ARVN as Nixon plans a national address on prospects for peace.

Monahans Dig-in A Beach Sculpting Celebration Ends

Monahan and his wife Dottie organized Lompoc’s first annual Dig-in on Ocean Park Beach drawing 300 to 500 people. A giant sand Mother sculpture over 100 yards long drew 2,000 hours of work before the tide demolished the piece. the event aims to return next year as a community tribute to mothers.

Seven Injured in Weekend Traffic Spreads Across Six Accidents

Six separate weekend crashes left seven people hurt with one man in serious condition. Joe Mihalovic, 24, of Lompoc, suffered a broken hip and fractures but was listed in good condition. Accidents occurred on Lompoc Casmalia Road, Armor Ranch Road, and Highway 246 near Campbell Road, involving drivers Hoyle Sylvester Wright Jr., Patrick Rush, Thomas Locke, Venancia Grider, John Holmes, Bertha Cox, and others.

Rogers heads to Viet Nam fact finding trip

Secretary of State William P. Rogers departed Washington for a four day fact finding mission to South Vietnam and an expanded tour of other South Asian nations. He flew from Andrews Air Force Base at 9 25 a m with his wife. He gave no formal departure statement beyond looking forward to the trip.

China and Soviet discuss Ussuri River navigation

China accepted a Soviet proposal to discuss navigation on the Ussuri River border where clashes caused heavy casualties. The Joint Sino Soviet River Commission would meet in Khabarovsk next Monday, with China preferring June for proper preparations. Resuming border talks proposed but not guaranteed.
