Motorcyclist Critically Injured After Headon Collision

A 20 year old Lompoc motorcyclist, David Ouellette, is in critical condition at Lompoc Hospital after a headon crash with Otto Cassey on Highway 246 near the Gresco plant. Ouellette was airborne, helmetless, and his bike was destroyed. Cassey’s car sustained moderate damage.

Reagan backs bond for UC Medical School amid campus protests

Governor Ronald Reagan endorsed Proposition 1 in California’s June 2 ballot, urging voters not to let campus disturbances derail the 246 million bond for University of California Medical School construction. He said passage would ease a critical doctor and nurse shortage and position California as a health care capital.

New Santa Barbara Heart Assn Directors Named at Dinner

The Santa Barbara County Heart Association elected new officers and directors at its 20th annual dinner at Montecito Country Club. Walter M. Lewis became president succeeding Judith Browning. Barry Coughlin of Lompoc joined the board along with Drs. Richard Lim and Fred J. Greenough and Charles R. Holden. Officer terms begin July 1. Dr. Lewis is an internist with cardiology interest and longtime Santa Barbara Medical Clinic staff. Dr. Clayton Klakey was named president elect of the California Heart Assn. at the meeting. Special awards honored Dianne Michael and Helen Smith for Heart Sunday leadership in Lompoc. Dr. Richard A. Cleveland spoke and received a $12,500 grant for ventricular function research after cardiac transplantation.

Lompoc Kiwanis Auction At Shopping Center Saturday

The Lompoc Kiwanis Club auction will be held at the Lompoc Shopping Center on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. Donations are welcome and free pick up is available by calling 3-2255. Unusual music program planned by library group

In Lom poc Public Library tonight the Under the Greenwood Tree Players perform medieval to contemporary pieces using period instruments. The Friends of the Library host a 7 30 p m meeting. program at 8 p m features Mrs Francis Dwight and others. The event closes the fall Friends series. In Marianhamina Finland a group of teens broke into a church to steal wine but caused bells to ring and a ladder to fall knocking out telephone service to the Soviet consulate, then were rounded up by police.

Train Crash at Riverbank Injures 26. No Fatalities Reported

The Santa Fe Chief passenger train collided with a forklift at Riverbank, toppling six cars down a 45 foot embankment and derailing six more. Twenty six passengers and crew were injured. damage exceeds 1 million dollars. The train was en route from a distant destination.

Lompoc Soldier Receives Army Commendation Medal

Lompoc native Green Beret Captain James D. Roberts 23 earned an Army Commendation Medal with a device for heroism during a January Vietnam operation. As senior advisor to a Vietnamese strike force he directed gunship fires and artillery, aiding five Viet Cong killed and enemy bunkers destroyed.

Strike at Grefco Reaches Twelfth Day in Lompoc Plant

Police chief cries over air pollution scare in Muskegon

Muskegon police chief of detectives Arnold Van Dam cried on his way to work over alleged air pollution in the city. He described the air as worsening and he blamed a tear gas canister that discharged in his breast pocket, causing eye irritation and redness.
