Runoff Election Set to Decide County Clerks Union Representation

A runoff election for 551 non supervisory county clerks will be held Thursday May 16 to choose representation by the County Employees Assn or SEIU. The May 2 tally had 200 votes for the union, 212 for the employe association, and 13 for no organization, prompting a runoff to avoid another tied result.

Retirements Mark Final Flight at Vandenberg AFB

Master Sergeant Mike R. Guerrero closes 30 years in the Air Force as Major General John W. Pauly presides at Vandenberg AFB. Guerrero earns the Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding service as NCOIC Public and Internal Information. Also retiring this month are 14 other officers and enlisted personnel from units including 4392nd Aerospace Support Group 4315th CCTS and 3901st SMES among others.

Purchase of lake Los Carneros purchase plan discussed by the Board of Supervisors as county seeks state funding and a $600 000 grant for a 137 acre lake property in Goleta Valley. County aims to acquire from Boise Cascade with a $1.2 million estimated value, led by Park Director Michael Pahos and Supervisor James M Slater. Staff to recommend denial of Zaca Lake expansion

County Planning Department staff urge denial of the Zaca Lake Resort expansion near Zaca Peak and Figueroa Mountain. The plan would harm traffic, safety, water, fire protection, and neighborhood character, conflicting with open grazing zoning and the general plan. The issue goes to the Planning Commission May 22.

Buellton Patrol Reports Sharp Drop in Area Accidents

Lt. R A Dzamba reports the first four months of 1974 brought the most favorable local accident experience in years. In the Santa Ynez Lompoc Valley area total accidents fell 26 percent with 44 fewer incidents and reportable crashes dropped 40 percent. Fatal accidents remained at two, about half the long term average. Drunk driving incidents declined seven percent despite a 29 percent rise in arrests. Speed dropped early then rose as fuel supplies improved. speeding arrests rose over 30 percent in the last 30 days.
