California capitol rally stays peaceful despite flag burnings

Sacramento police estimated 7000 to 10000 protesters marched to the state capitol for a two hour antiwar rally. No arrests were made as demonstrators held a sit down and a student leader urged restraint. Three flags were set afire during the event.

Sgt presses court martial after merit finding at base

At Vandenberg Air Force Base a chief master sergeant seeks Air Force Chief of Staff review of court martial charges against Col. Earl Sweetland and Col. Philip Cardin. The charges were deemed without merit by Maj. Gen. Garland after a three week inquiry. Sgt. Milton White had been aiming to form a Malcolm X group on base. White returns from Lackland AFB after psychological evaluation.

Rail buffs to visit here for 24-car excursion

A 24 car charter passenger train with 800 railroad buffs will depart Los Angeles Southern Pacific Station on Sunday May 17 for Lompoc Valley to enjoy flower fields and the Fiesta de la Purisima. Pacific Railroad Society excursion director Roland Graham calls it the most popular tour yet as a Surf Station bus caravan will shuttle visitors to the Mission and flower fields before returning to Los Angeles the same night.

Los Angeles teachers near end of strike ratification

United Teachers of Los Angeles backs mediator Benjamin Aaron's plan to end the month-long walkout. If UCLA faculty and the Board of Education ratify Sunday, the district could be back to school by Monday. The mediator's plan would reverse most budget cuts, reduce class sizes, add reading classes, boost aid to poverty areas, raise teacher influence, and grant a 7 percent pay hike.

Re open Kent State remains in doubt after campus shutdown

Kent State University remains closed with no guards on campus for the first time in a week. President Robert I White says the university will stay closed at least through June 13 due to safety concerns after a National Guardsman fire on rioters left four students dead and 10 wounded.

California students from 40 campuses form the California Student Offensive at San Jose State to demand a nationwide campus shutdown to end the Vietnam War racism and poverty. They call for disassociating from the war effort, draft resistance, political amnesty, and closing junior colleges and high schools to redirect resources against Indochina.
