In Washington thousands of antiwar protesters plan a major rally as President Nixon and Congress seek to curb violence. Police permit brief peaceful gathering on H Street while main events target the Washington Monument grounds.
The Grefco Inc strike enters its second week with no change in talks between the company and International Union District 50 Allied and Technical Workers. A federal mediator held a preliminary meeting in Los Angeles, but no agreement was reached. Sixty-eight employees rejected the last offer on April 30 and walking pickets remain at the plant.
The Senate plans a late week vote on an amendment to the foreign military sales bill to bar funding for retaining U S ground forces in Cambodia. Senators Church and Cooper introduced the measure, with Mansfield and Scott backing speed to the floor, noting July 1 withdrawal target but unsure White House support.
A freak blaze burned the front wall of Rachel Lopez’s home at 415 2N 1 St and spread to the roof before firefighters could contain it. The fire started on a porch chair near a wall heater, reignited at 1 a.m., and was contained with minimal damage aside from the wall and porch chair. A combined U S Navy and South Vietnamese river force sails upriver toward Chau Doc with air cover expected, while secrecy flaws spark protests and risk of ambushes near Neak Luong. The Labor Department reports the unemployment rate climbed from 4.4 percent in March to 4.8 percent in April, with 3.9 million job seekers. United Press International reports at least 200 colleges and universities shut temporarily amid continuous student demonstrations against the Indochina war and the Ohio killings. The wave, now in its fifth day, aims for a mass protest peak Saturday as University of Wisconsin president Fred Harrington resigns effective Oct. 1 amid campus demonstrations.
