Charges Dropped in Vandenberg Malcolm X Chapter Case

The 1st STRATAD commander Maj. Gen. William C. Garland dismissed charges against Sgt. White and two officers finding allegations of conspiracy, obstruction, and miscible conduct unfounded after a three week inquiry conducted by a senior judge advocate from another command. White, once TDY slated and hospitalized for observation, was released and expected to report back to Vandenberg. Col. Sweetland remains base commander while Col. Cardin is on terminal leave prior to retirement.

Hancock College Stays Open Amid Governor's Closure Suggestion

Allan Hancock College will remain open today and tomorrow with all classes and events as scheduled. A spokesman for Chancellor Sidney W. Brossman noted only colleges near campuses would likely close, while rules from the state level offered an option to close or stay open.

Kent State Guard says shooting was self defense

The National Guard maintains the Kent State University shootings were in self defense. Sen. Young disputes the guard account, saying the first shot may have been accidental after a student threw a tear gas canister. The guard declined most questions, with some members expressing regret.

California Legislature Cancelled Friday Session

Senate leader Jack Schrade ordered the legislature closed on Friday May 8 1970 amid antiwar and peace demonstrations at the State Capitol. Employees were not required to report to work and the cancellation was described as the first of its kind.

Weather outlook with coastal clouds and mild inland warmth

Fair weather continues through Friday with night and morning low clouds along the coast. Highs today range from the low 60s near the coast to the low 70s inland, and highs Friday rise from the mid 60s to mid 70s with lows in the 40s. Northwest winds 10 to 20 mph in the afternoons, Friday tides include a high of 3.1 feet at 1 56 p.m. and low tides of minus 0.7 feet at 7 02 a.m. and 2.5 feet at 5 44 p.m.

U.S. Troops Airlifted Deep Into Cambodia

UPI reports thousands of American and Allied forces flown into northeastern Cambodia and the heart of a North Vietnamese bunker complex. A helicopter crash killed nine Americans, raising weekly U.S. fatalities to 75 in Vietnam and 44 in Cambodia, with 123 killed and 997 wounded last week. Units include the 4th Infantry Division the 101st Airborne and the 22nd Infantry Division.

Internal probe underway after Copeland case dismissal

An internal affairs inquiry is active in the Lompoc Sheriff’s Department after Robert Copeland, 18, had all charges dropped following an arrest for heroin possession when he was 17. Undersheriff King ordered the investigation. Lt. Hersman’s in-depth report was filed May 1 as Capt. Patterson said the probe continues, possibly ending in 1–2 weeks.

Doves Grow in Number in House Cambodia War Debate

In a five hour Wednesday session the House debated U S involvement in Cambodia Laos and Thailand. Six votes on war funding were held with 148 supporters for the anti war stance as the 20.2 billion bill for next year passed 326 to 29. The Findley amendment to bar funds for U S combat troops unless the President reports necessity was killed 221 to 32.

Southern California colleges cancel classes amid protests

In Los Angeles area campuses, classes were cancelled as students and faculty rallied and marched to protest U S involvement in Cambodia and the Kent State killings. Reagan ordered state campuses closed, but many students ignored the decree joining a campus program at USC and other colleges.
