Kidnapers Back Down On Promise In Guadalajara

Guerrilla kidnappers of Consul General Terrence Leonhardy reportedly backtracked on freeing him after 30 political prisoners were flown to Cuba. Officials cite possible new demands including a cash ransom and note heightened speculation over delays. The U S Consulate in Guadalajara called the situation very delicate with no further official details.

Richardson to name special prosecutor for Watergate inquiry

Elliott L. Richardson said he will appoint an independent prosecutor after confirmation as attorney general to supervise the federal Watergate investigation and seek the whole truth. He stressed the appointee will have full independence and report only to him, not to any alleged participants.

Night and morning low clouds give way to sunny afternoons today and Tuesday. A little warmer today with highs of 65 to 75 and lows of 45 to 57. Tuesday brings tides of 4.9 feet at 2 42 a.m. and 3.9 feet at 5 25 p.m. Low tides reach minus 0.4 at 10 14 a.m. and 2.4 feet at 10 26 p.m.

Nixon allegedly ordered wiretaps on reporters and aides

Time magazine reports FBI director Hoover hid documents authorizing wiretaps signed by Attorney General Mitchell and ordered by President Nixon to identify government leaks. Hoover allegedly threatened to reveal the taps when pressured, and no further action followed.

Nixon denies awareness of Watergate coverup in Florida

White House denies President Nixon knew before March of the Watergate scandal or attempts to cover it up. Deputy Press Secretary Warren says reports of Nixon involvement are untrue and that the president did not authorize clemency. Nixon met with Gen. Cut in school Taxes possible for 1973-74

Lompoc Unified School District trustees consider tax relief for 1973-74 with potential rate cuts from $3.77 to $1.80 per $100 or to $1.80 plus 57 cents to offset P L 874 losses. The board also seeks federal support from Congressman Teague and reviews funding for early childhood programs and a Drop-In Center. County budget proposal keeps tax rate steady for 1973-74

County Administrative Officer Raymond D. Johnson told the Board of Supervisors the proposed 77.446 million budget for 1973-74 requires no property tax increase. He cited welfare cuts and federal revenue sharing reducing potential levy increases, with hearings starting June 6 as the new fiscal year begins July 1.

South Platte River recedes after Denver flood evacuations

The South Platte River swollen by four inches of rain in Denver and 20 inches in the mountains receded from flood force that forced 3,500 to 7,000 people from their homes. No deaths or injuries were reported though a bridge was washed out and 900+ calls were made for pump-outs.

Krogh admits responsibility for Pentagon Papers break-in

Former presidential aide Egil Krogh Jr. told Godfrey Sperling Jr. he assumes full responsibility for the 1971 break-in at Daniel Ellsberg’s psychiatrist's office. He said national security fears influenced the action, calling it excessive and acknowledging inexperience and overzealousness. He cited Ehrlichman’s orders and noted this reflected beyond instructions.
