Huey Newton bail appeal heard as protests erupt nationwide

UPI report from San Francisco says federal Judge Alfonso J. Zirpoli heard two hours of arguments on Huey P. Newton’s bail appeal while about 3000 Black Panther supporters demonstrated outside with placards and Mao quotes. Newton, serving 2 to 15 years for a fatal Oakland officer shooting, was not present in court.

Drug abuse clinic scheduled for Lompoc valley development

A three day weekend drug education clinic arrives in Lompoc May 9 to 11 organized by the Prophet Coffeehouse with the Lompoc School District and Police Department. The effort targets teens and adults with open talks at Lompoc Cabrillo High, The Prophet, Lompoc Junior High and community discussions.

Prophylactic Sales to Minors Moves Forward in Senate

The Senate Business and Professions Committee voted to legalize prophylactic sales to unmarried persons under 18 and approved a second Beilenson measure allowing free distribution. Both measures move to the Senate floor as venereal disease rates rise among under 18s. Beilenson cited 1968 California gonorrhea up 34 percent and under 19 rates up 35 percent.

Weather Exceptions Ring Nation With Frost and Thunder

Cool showery weather marked the Northwest while thundershowers dotted the upper Midwest and Deep South. Thunderstorms spanned the upper Mississippi Valley and Gulf Coast Southeast Texas as light rain moved across the Northwest to the Northern Plains. Frost appeared in Western Dakotas and parts of the Northeast amid readings from 24 to 77 across locations.
