POWS Leave for U.S. as Clark Air Lift Continues

Three hospital jets carried 48 ex POWs from Clark Air Base in the Philippines toward family reunions in the United States. A second day left 69 POWs at Clark awaiting tests while officials aimed for four more flights Sunday, though medical issues could delay.

Meat ceiling sparks anger from farmers and meat leaders

Farm and meat industry leaders vented anger over President Nixon’s meat pen ceiling. Nebraska Farmers Union President Elton Berck accused the move of siding with Wall Street cowboys and labor czars. Housewives and women’s groups dismissed the plan as a grandstand, while some groups canceled boycotts. LEA Council Endorses Jacoby and Steiger for School Board

The Lompoc Education Association Representative Council endorsed Richard Jacoby and Gail Steiger for the two school board seats in the April 17 election. Rain won’t delay color in Lompoc flower fields

Lompoc Valley’s flower fields will produce color this summer despite heavy rainfall and late planting. Seed companies are one to 1½ months behind schedule, with hearty and tender annuals planted across a shifted timeline. Sweetpeas sowed in December are set to bloom at the Flower Festival in late June, though overall bloom may come later and yield could be lower.

Preserve Lompoc's Unique Surroundings PLUS has filed a violation claim with the Board of Supervisors asking a reconsideration of the Brisby subdivision approval six miles west of Buellton on Santa Rosa Rd. The group argues the 5 acre parcels are wrongly designated for residential use being surrounded by agriculture preserves.

Los Angeles UPI Tom Hayden called returning American prisoners of war liars hypocrites and pawns. He and Jane Fonda, who visited Hanoi during the war, argued the POWs were well treated and exploited by President Nixon to cast the war in a favorable light.

Nixon and Thieu to Meet in California

President Nixon flew to California for a two day talks with South Vietnam leader Nguyen Van Thieu at San Clemente’s Western White House. They will discuss military economic and diplomatic support as negotiations continue in Paris with Viet Cong and Saigon seeking a path to normalcy amid cease fire violations.
