Fire damages shed. kennel club meeting announced

A small storage shed off La Salle Canyon Road burned yesterday afternoon destroying lumber a stepladder and a motorcycle seat while another motorcycle shed and contents were saved. Cause under investigation. Also reports on the Lompoc Valley Kennel Club general meeting for tonight at 7 30 in City Hall with speaker Sol Lefkowitz and dog show film.

Teacher denied pay for wedding leave in Rhode Island

Thomas W. Hall of Ponaganset High School asked two days of paid emergency leave after his wedding. Education Commissioner William P. Robinson rejected the claim, ruling the wedding did not qualify as an emergency under state policy.

Army Commendation Medal for Waller in Vietnam

Spec. 4 Charles E. Waller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles S. Waller of Lompoc, earned the Army Commendation Medal while serving with the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam. As a clerk-typist with Company D, 65th Engineer Battalion near Cu Chi, he was cited for meritorious service. He joined the Army in August 1968 and was last stationed at Fort Campbell Kentucky.

Ballot issue for commission pay rejected

The Board of Supervisors unanimously denied a request by the Sheriff’s Civil Service Commission to place on the November ballot an initiative ordinance amendment to compensate commissioners. Supervisor Curtis Tunnell said pay would imply paying all others, echoed by Supervisor Francis Beattie, who called compensation ridiculous and warned it would open Pandora’s box. Current pay is mileage at 10 cents a mile and meals. no compensation exists in the ordinance.

Refuse officials surrender after jury indictment

Principal figures in a Southern California refuse company surrendered to the sheriff after bench warrants were issued following secret grand jury indictments. The four surrendered men face counts of violations of state and federal tax and corporations codes, with arraignment postponed to April 20. A fifth warrant remained unserved.

Two supervisors blame Board of Supervisors chair George H. Clyde for not informing them about a UC Regents agenda item on Isla Vista riots. Board to Await Santa Barbara Council Action

The board voted 3 to 2 to defer action until the Santa Barbara City Council acts on a request by the Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District to later increase the current 5 cent transit tax levy. Transit district counsel Frank Sarguis argued the act’s section requiring supervisors and city council approval has no basis. The city council meets Tuesday to consider the request, with a cautious wait and see stance favored by Supervisor Callahan and supported by Tunell and Beattie.

Village tavern burglary arrests teen suspect

Sheriff's deputies arrested a 17 year old high school sophomore on suspicion of burglarizing the Village Pump Room last Wednesday. About $70 of the $165 stolen from the Vandenberg Village tavern has been recovered. The suspect was handed to juvenile authorities and was being questioned after attempting to exchange coins for cash in a Lompoch business Thursday.
