No lasting effects seen from 1971 San Francisco Bay oil spill
A 1971 oil spill smothered 4.2 to 7.5 million marine invertebrates, mainly barnacles. From 1972 to 1974 counts rebounded to or above pre spill levels. Surf grass and most algae recovered. about 50 percent of mussel beds were oil covered with 2 percent loss. Snails graze in affected areas.

A panel of doctors says recent advances give child cancer patients a 50 percent or better five year survival chance with up to date therapy. Most effective care is at specialized centers with multidisciplinary teams, and about 100 institutions exist nationwide. Brain tumors and nervous system cancers remain less curable at five years.
